Children as Citizens in Alternative to Public School Settings

October 20, 2018 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

$25

Maggie Van Camp of Lesley University will open and facilitate this event. All are invited, especially those who are curious about children as citizens in the context of self-directed learning, alternatives to public schools and home schooling. Proceeds will benefit the Alliance for Self-Directed Learning.

Keynote with Peter Gray, Research Professor of Psychology at Boston College, author of Free to Learn will present Mother Nature’s Pedagogy: How Children’s Natural Curiosity, Playfulness, and Sociability Serve Their Education.

Children come into the world exquisitely designed by natural selection to learn about the physical, social, and cultural world around them. In this talk–based on cross-cultural research, laboratory studies, and my own research at alternative educational settings in the United States–I will describe how children’s instincts to explore, play, and bond with others provide the natural foundation for education. I will also describe the conditions in which these educative instincts seem to operate best.

We will follow with rich stories from the field with speakers:

Kerry McDonald, local author, blogger and unschooling mom of four.

Ben Draper of Macomber Center: A self-directed learning community in Framingham, Ma.

Christine Heer, director, and Lisa Henderson assistant director, of Sprouts Farm and Forest Kindergarten in Millis, MA.

All proceeds will support the Alliance for Self-Directed Learning
