Dialogue with Places: Space Speaks with Hilary Odoy of Newtowne School

August 20, 2018 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Space Speaks with Hilary Odoy

Does your classroom reflect your best practice? Are there key elements within your space that you’d like to zoom in on? We know that the environment plays a huge role in the success of our classroom, as the third educator. A thoughtfully arranged classroom is as important as a well-trained teacher and can be one of our biggest allies. When challenges arise in our programs, it is always important to consider how changes within a space can be of support. In this interactive session, we will review the importance of the environment’s role, reflect on a few examples of how challenges in spaces were addressed, uncover ways to enhance your space, and reflect on key elements like color, texture, lighting, and elements of the natural world.

As the director of Newtowne, Hilary brings over 20 years of extensive experience building model early childhood programs, specifically with the Reggio Emilia approach in mind. She has worked as an advocate in her own community as a parent supporting major educational initiatives and believes wholeheartedly that a child’s learning experience relies on the presence of three major educators: the adult (both parents and teachers), the environment, and a child’s peers. She is honored to be orchestrating this collaborative community of learning. Her school and work have become a destination for visitors from around the world and her workshops for practitioners inspire. She has been recognized by colleagues and researchers for her exceptional understanding of how to create optimal learning environments and develop documentation that shows children as capable and truly makes learning visible. In addition to organizing and presenting at the Wonder of Learning Boston 2018, she also designed our materials and ray of light ateliers.
